Let the drinking begin...

Okay, quick - are the kids in the room? Send them out. You don't want them to have the information I'm going to give you for at least 10 more years. We are officially less than 48 hours from arrival my friends. On Saturdays the inlaws descend in all their glory for a full week. I've been cleaning like a mad woman. I've made menus, city guides, and gift baskets. I've been buying food, decorative accessories, shoes (okay, maybe they weren't necessary for the visit, but they were necessary for my mental health). It also means that currently my meal selections revolve more around "what I'm drinking" than "what I'm eating."

One of the tricks I learned in college is that you should never drink on an empty stomach - because you'll get sick. HOWEVER, if you are going to eat, you don't want to carb up, or you won't feel your alcohol at all (see why we sent the kids out of the room? Drinking 101 rule 1 is responsibility) So if you're planning a night of drinking, go heavy protein, light carbs. Save the carbs for your hangover breakfast.

I came home with a giant bottle of margarita mix, limes, and tequila and Thatboy was pretty adamant we would need something more for dinner. Stick in the mud. So I thought a steak salad would be an excellent way to keep the fun going all night. It also served as a good way to use up the arugula I had in the fridge - part of the "Clean out the fridge and freezer before the inlaws come and criticize the way you store your food" plan. More on that later.

Get Your Drink On Steak Salad

  • 2 cups arugula
  • 3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced
  • shredded cheddar cheese
  • shredded monterey jack cheese

  1. Season steak with garlic salt.
  2. Heat grill pan over medium heat. Grill steaks 11 minutes, turning halfway through.
  3. Slice steak into thin slices.
  4. Place 1 cup of argula and tomato slices on plate and top with your favorite dressing.
  5. Top salad with steak slices.
  6. Top salad with shredded cheese.

  2. This made me laugh bc thanks to my epilepsy meds and 7 years with no alcohol (when the epilepsy was active) I now spend my time drinking carbing like mad--so I can have more than 2 drinks. :)

Have, er, fun with your in laws.

  3. The older I get the less my body will let me drink. Went to a beer tasting dinner the other night where four beers were poured for me throughout the evening. I could drink one. Oh well. Steak salad looks good even this early on a Sat morning.

  5. i saw your comment in weezermonkey blog about the atlanta aquarium. if you are going there don't pass up on the behind the scenes tours. we were the last tour group to go to for the day. we ended up getting to go to 4 of the behind the scenes instead of 2. also the deepo's under sea 3d show should not be missed either. that was my fave things to do while we were at the aquarium.

  6. Wow - that is some pretty intense prep for the in-laws. Impressive.

Did you say that you were going to Canada? Or did I make that up?

  7. Dang! I'm the "in-law". Not yours, but I'm heading out for a week. To see the new-grandbabies (twins)
I will remember to not criticize her fridge...(as if I would care anyway, but...)
LOL, your post made me laugh.

  8. This totally made me giggle. :)

While I am actually blessed with inlaws who are quite normal and fun, I still clean like a madwoman before they come over and go to great lengths with menu prep. So yeah, I feel your pain.

The big difference - they actually appreciate it. :/
